Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasitic protozoan that causes trichomoniasis, a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). It’s a flagellated, anaerobic parasite that infects the urogenital tract.

    • Causative Agent: Trichomonas vaginalis is the sole causative agent of trichomoniasis. 
    • Transmission: It’s primarily transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, oral, and anal sex. 
  • Incubation Period: The incubation period for trichomoniasis is typically 5 to 28 days. 
  • Symptoms: While many people are asymptomatic, symptoms in women can include vaginal discharge, itching, painful intercourse, and urinary symptoms. Men may experience urethritis, testicular pain, or penile discharge. 
  • Treatment: Trichomoniasis is easily treated with antibiotics like metronidazole or tinidazole. 
  • Complications: Untreated trichomoniasis can increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting other STIs, including HIV, and can also cause inflammation of the reproductive tract.
