A hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) test is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past 2–3 monthsIt’s also known as an A1C test, glycated hemoglobin test, or glycohemoglobin test.

What it’s used for

  • Diagnosing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes
  • Monitoring blood sugar control in people with diabetes
  • Assessing how well diabetes is being managed
How it works

  • Glucose attaches to hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells
  • The more glucose in your blood, the more hemoglobin will be coated with glucose
  • The test measures the percentage of red blood cells that have glucose-coated hemoglobin
Normal range
  • A normal A1C level for adults is below 5.7%
  • A diagnosis of diabetes can be made if your HbA1c result is 6.5% or more
When to get tested

Report: Daily
Usage: This assay is useful for diagnosing Diabetes and evaluating long term control of blood glucose concentrations in diabetic patients. It reflects the mean glucose concentration over the previous period of 8 to 12 weeks and is a better indicator of long term glycemic control as compared with blood glucose levels due to lesser day to day variation.
