A fasting blood sugar test measures the amount of sugar in your blood after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours. It’s a screening test for diabetes.
Normal fasting blood sugar level
A fasting blood sugar level of 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L) is considered normal
Abnormal fasting blood sugar levels
A fasting blood sugar level of 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L) is considered prediabetes
A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests is considered diabetes
How to prepare
Don’t eat or drink anything (except water) for 8 to 12 hours
Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions about how long to fast
Why it’s important
Fasting blood sugar levels help determine whether you have diabetes or how you’re managing your diabetes
High fasting blood sugar levels indicate that you are more likely to have issues with insulin production
Other information
Blood glucose measured by a blood test from a vein is considered more accurate than blood glucose measured from a fingerstick
