A hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) test is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past 2–3 months. It’s also known as an A1C test, glycated hemoglobin test, or glycohemoglobin test.

How it works
Glucose attaches to hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells
The more glucose in your blood, the more hemoglobin will be coated with glucose
The test measures the percentage of red blood cells that have glucose-coated hemoglobin
Normal range
A normal A1C level for adults is below 5.7%
A diagnosis of diabetes can be made if your HbA1c result is 6.5% or more
When to get tested
People with diabetes are advised to have this test every 3 to 6 months
